Frequently Asked Questions

The most popular time to visit Spiti is from May to October, when the high mountain passes like Rohtang and Kunzum La open and roads become accessible. During winter months, many routes remain closed due to heavy snowfall, especially via Manali, and only the Shimla–Recong Peo route may stay open.

For a comfortable trip, carry essentials like warm layered clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, sturdy shoes, personal medicines (especially for altitude sickness), and sufficient cash as ATMs are limited in the valley.

Indian citizens do not require special permits to visit Spiti. Foreign nationals (non‑Indian passport holders) may need an Inner Line Permit (ILP), especially when entering from Shimla or visiting certain restricted areas. Permits can usually be obtained from the District Collector’s office or local check posts.

Spiti Valley Travel Guidelines

Spiti Valley is a beautiful and remote mountain region in Himachal Pradesh. Before starting your trip, make sure you have the Aarogya Setu app installed on your phone. All travelers must follow the safety rules and guidelines issued by the local Disaster Management and Health Departments.
Indian citizens do not need any permit to enter Spiti Valley. However, foreign travelers must carry an Inner Line Permit (ILP) if they are entering Spiti through the Shimla–Kinnaur route, as this area is close to the Indo-Tibetan border. The ILP can be obtained from the Permit Office at Reckong Peo, Kinnaur.
Spiti Valley is located at a very high altitude (over 4,000 meters). Altitude sickness is common, so take at least 1–2 days to adjust. Stay hydrated, avoid heavy activity at first, and carry medicines for altitude sickness if needed.
There are very few ATMs, and card payments usually do not work. Carry enough cash for your entire trip. Electricity can be irregular, so keep power banks with you.
Mobile network is weak in many areas. BSNL and Jio work best, but coverage is still limited. Always inform someone about your travel plan before visiting remote places.
Lastly, respect nature. Do not litter, avoid plastic, and carry your waste back. Responsible travel helps keep Spiti clean and beautiful.
